Matthew1:18-24 Jesus will be born of Mary, who is betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of David

Sharing Guidelines
*Sharing is not a time for teaching or debate; it is a time to sense the marvelous work of the Holy Spirit who leads the gathering.
*Reflection sharing is not meant to teach others but to share the meaning you personally have discovered. Therefore, do not criticize or debate another person’s sharing. Avoid boasting of your own understanding or knowledge.
*Respect the grace of the Holy Spirit, who reveals the meaning of the Word while dwelling among us, and listen attentively to others’ sharing, holding it in your heart.
*Keep confidential any personal reflections or stories shared in the group; practicing brotherly love means not passing along private matters outside the meeting.
*When speaking, always use the first person singular (“I”). Be careful not to distance or generalize your story by using the third person (“he,” “they”) or the first person plural (“we”).
*Keep it short.

Isaiah 7:10-14
The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God;
let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered,
“I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!”
Then Isaiah said:
Listen, O house of David!
Is it not enough for you to weary people,
must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel.

Romans 1:1-7
Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus,
called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God,
which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,
the gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh,
but established as Son of God in power
according to the Spirit of holiness
through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him we have received the grace of apostleship,
to bring about the obedience of faith,
for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles,
among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ;
to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel
Matthew 1:18-24
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.

Today’s Reflection
Today’s Gospel is about Joseph, a righteous man. An angel came to Joseph and told him that his fiancée, Mary, was going to have a baby through the Holy Spirit. How hard that must have been for Joseph to believe! If something like that happened to us, could we easily accept it?
But Joseph accepted it because he trusted God. He believed that it was God’s work, so he obeyed. Because of Joseph’s trust, baby Jesus could be born into this world.

Trust gives us great strength. In our faith life, we also face times when things are too hard to understand or accept. Sometimes we even feel upset with God. But even in those times, we must not lose our trust in Him. Instead, we should try to understand what God wants from us.

Even when God seems silent, He never abandons us. Those who overcome their pain with faith can see the world in a new way—through God’s eyes. They begin to understand what suffering and happiness truly mean.

Maybe the biggest reason we fail to trust God is because we only see what is right in front of us. But even when life is hard and we fall or fail, if we keep our unchanging trust in the Lord, we will see new heavens and a new earth—things we could not see before. We will find new hope, just like Joseph did.

Let us reflect today on what it means to have unwavering trust in the Lord.(김준철 토마스 아퀴나스 신부)

Sharing:

1. Let’s share any word or phrase from today’s reading that touched your heart. Or, let’s reflect on the Gospel from one of these perspectives:
– From the angel Gabriel’s point of view
– From Joseph’s point of view
– From Mary’s point of view

2. Think about a moment in your life when one decision completely changed your future—whether in your faith or in your daily life. How did that decision affect you or the people around you?

3. The reflection says, “we also face times when things are too hard to understand or accept” Let’s share about a time when we faced pain or disappointment. How did we overcome it, and how did it change the way we see the world?

4. Was there ever a time in your life when, only after looking back, you realized, “Maybe that was God’s call”? How did you respond? If you responded positively, what helped you say “yes”? If not, what held you back or led you in a different direction?

Resolution: Based on today’s message, what kind of life do you want to live from now on?
